Do you remember when trendy outfits from Shein were blowing the internet? It quickly became popular among youngsters for its affordable apparel. If you’ve been missing those days, here’s some exciting news for you – Shein is back in India!

But, India banned the app in 2020. Wondering why it was barred? Keep reading to learn more why India banned it earlier, its current revival, the changes to expect this time and more.

Why did India ban Shein?

The Chinese fashion retail brand was banned in India in 2020. Along with Shein, other apps like TikTok, PUBG, Xender, and more were also banned.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) of India implemented the ban due to concerns about data theft. Moreover, the border issue between India and China at that time fueled it more.

Why is Shein Returning now?

Shein has now been relaunched in India by Reliance Retail. The two companies have come together under a “Licensing Partnership”. As per this, the former is allowed to use the brand’s name, “Shein”.

The Government also clarified that the ban was specific to the app and not the sale of Shein-branded products. It also mandated that manufacturing should be conducted locally inside India, including the designing. This initiative aligns with the government’s “Make in India” campaign, emphasizing the local production and employment.

Reliance has assured  the responsibility for data security and the business operations within India. Whereas, Shein India will retain  their control over technology-related aspects. Currently, the app is live in cities like Mumbai (including Navi Mumbai), Bangalore, Delhi NCR & Thane.

Ajio, another platform owned by Reliance, will continue operating as a multi-brand platform. However, the partnership does not extend to Ajio. Reliance’s strategic move to strengthen their foothold in the fashion industry is significant. This move is expected to make a big shift in India’s e-commerce in the coming years.

The brand is making a comeback, but the question remains – will it operate the same way it did before? Let’s find out.

Changes in the business model

Here are a few differences in the previous business model and the current ones:

Old Business Model:

  1. Goods were imported and sold in India
  2. No audits involved
  3. Customer data and technology was controlled by the brand

Current Business Model:

  1. Localisation of designing and manufacturing of the fashion products
  2. Periodical audits by the government-approved cyber-security firm(s).
  3. Shein will handle technology related aspects.
  4. Reliance to manage operations & data security
  5. Focus on sustainability and waste reduction.

What Indian Customers can Expect

The fashion apparels start from as low as INR 199. The clothing pieces start from the least price of INR 350. No doubt that it is called the most affordable fashion provider.

Indian customers can also expect new arrivals and trendy pieces under budget. A dedicated app ensures easy accessibility.

Challenges and Controversies

Though it sounds welcoming, it comes with its challenges. A few of such challenges are:

  1. How will former Indian customers perceive Shein’s return amidst “Boycott China” sentiments?
  2. Despite its affordability, Shein has previously faced scrutiny over labor practices and environmental concerns, which may impact consumer trust.
  3. Can Shein compete and survive the increased fashion platforms like Amazon, Myntra?
  4. Indian Government’s restriction on compliance and data privacy, including periodic audits add an additional layer of complexity.

Final Thoughts: Is Shein’s return a game changer?

Shein’s comeback to India comes with a wave of excitement among the fashion enthusiasts. Affordable fashion lovers who missed the brand are in awe. Yet, the comeback also comes with challenges.

While the partnership move addresses data privacy concerns, India’s evolving fashion market remains a highly competitive space. With increased fashion platforms, it is debatable if Shein can reclaim its lost consumer base.

Furthermore, will it regain its lost position as a go-to destination for affordable fashion among the consumers? Ultimately, Shein’s return excites fashion lovers, its success depends on how well it adapts to India’s evolving fashion market and consumer trust.
